School-to-Work

Lynn Olson had written an article entitled, "An Avenue to High Academic Standards." The article argues that students should enroll in school-to-work programs so they can see what they want to be and get the training as needed. Erika Pyne agrees with Olson, she had stated, "I had all these wonderful experiences that most people my age couldn't talk about (Pyne 78). She goes on talking on how she did the school-to-work program. Many agree with her, but Phyllis Schlafly does not. She argues how school-to-work trains people on jobs and doesn't educate them with the school work (Schlafly 84).
In this article, Olson has many main points she brings up. "High-quality school-to-work programs combine learning in school and in the workplace" (Olson 78). With this, many students can get their education at school and then later in the day go to work and learn on-the-job training. "School-to-work can encourage young people to pursue education and training beyond high school," stated Olson (79). They can go get a job that they have had the training for or go to college and learn more about their profession. Another point she stated in this article, "Not every school-to-work program is right. But good school-to-work activities can provide choices and opportunities" (Olson 79). Basically most of the programs can get a student ready for the real world, but then again some may not be right for a certain job, or a child mature enough to go through with the school-to-work program. Schlafly somewhat agrees to this. In her article, "School-to-Work Will Train, Not Educate," she had stated, "STW laws and regulations require vocational training to start "at the earliest possible age, but beginning no later than middle school grades" (Schlafly 84). With this said, the decision to do the program is not voluntary, but it is made by the school. Young children aren't mature enough to know what they want to do when they get older.
