Eminem: Psychodynamics

During this stage of Marshall's life he was being moved from Missouri to Michigan, never staying in one place for more than a year or two. He never developed a real relationship with any of the other children and he rarely attended school, which may have caused him to feel inferior. The fifth stage ranging from age 12-18, ego identity v. role confusion is where Marshall's life took a turn for the worst. This is the stage when most people start to question, "who am I" and wonder what their role in society is. At this point in Marshall's life he felt like he did not belong. He was being bullied every single day. Marshall lived in a predominately black community, so other children in the neighborhood were constantly assaulting him because he was white. The negative outcome from this stage is that the person may have difficulty making decisions and choices especially about his role in life, in general. The current stage that Marshall is in now is stage 6. This stage is called Intimacy v. Isolation, age 18-30. In this stage the most important events that can happen during this stage are love relationships. "No matter how successful you are with your work, you are not developmentally complete until you are capable of Intimacy" said Erikson. Marshall may not have been developed mentally by he did find intimacy with his long time girlfriend and former wife Kim. The two have had an on off relationship for over 8 years. He was at one time committed to Kim and their daughter Hallie, proving that he is and was capable of obtaining an intimate relationship. The next two stages, Middle Adulthood and Late Adulthood, have yet to occur, but as Marshall goes through these different stages of his life he becomes more empowered and more determined to over come all of the obstacle that have been set in his path. Erikson would truly be amazed at all of Marshall's accomplishments.
