When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine

Lilia realizes that Mr. Pirzada is a very kind man and he cares about Lilia very much. This shows when Lilia decides to go trick-or-treating; Mr. Pirzada gets a little uneasy about her going and he wants to go with her to make sure that she is safe. Lilia notices how much he actually cares when he does this and I believe that Lilia wants to let him be that way because he doesn't have his daughters to take care of and watch out for.
Mr. Pirzada and Lilia begin to have a connection as Lilia learns and becomes more interested in his life and where he is from. What I believe really connects them is when Lilia is eating a piece of candy that Mr. Pirzada gives her. She begins to pray for him and she has never prayed for anyone and she doesn't even know how, but she just felt like she had the ability to pray. She just lets the candy melt in her mouth as she prays. She doesn't brush her teeth that night because she doesn't want the prayer to go away. This part is very touching to me because throughout the story she seems like she wanted to comfort him, but just didn't know how. And when she prays it seems like she finally finds a way that she believes can help, even if he doesn't know she is doing it. .
This is a very powerful story. Writing from the view point of a ten year old child made it interesting. It really shows how culture can shape a person. And it seems that what is going on in the world at that time brought Mr. Pirzada together with Lilia's parents, "the three of them operating during that time as if they were a single person, sharing a single meal, a single body, a single silence, and a single fear" (77). This shows how they are all regular people, but because of the conflict going on, they are considered different.
In " When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dinner", the child of the host family, wondered about something closer to his world. " Before eating, Mr. Pirzada always did a curious thing.
