Republican Candidate Todd Akin Asked to Step Down After Rape Remarks

Although President Barack Obama has fervently tried to steer clear of these social issues in the weeks leading up to the presidential election, he did make a statement against Akin. "Rape is rape," he said (Weisman).
"What I think these comments do underscore is why we shouldn't have a bunch of politicians, a majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women," said Obama (Weisman). .
The Republican Party's immediate response of pushing Akin out of the race is partly due to the tight deadline they face. If Akin drops out by closing time on August 21st, the Missouri Republican central committee can still name a replacement for the November ballot. If Akin steps down after the ballot goes to printers, he would be responsible for paying for a reprint. Additionally, he can quit before September 25th, but Robin Carnahan, the Missouri secretary of state and member of the Democratic Party, can challenge the move (Weisman). .
Although many Republicans at the national level have called on Akin to step down, his party members within Missouri are less harsh on his supposed stumble. "The congressman is totally, firmly, solidly pro-life," said Sharon Barnes, a member of the state Republican committee. She continued to say that Akin believes "that abortion is never an option" (Weisman).
She added that the controversy would be short-lived, and once voters became more acquainted with Akin, they would know "what a great, conservative, godly man Todd Akin is, and they'll put his comment in its proper context" (Weisman).
"That's more what I believe he was trying to get across. That's more what I believe he was trying to state. He just phrased it badly," she added (Weisman). .
Despite many Republican members having asked Akin to step aside, he publicly announced his intentions to continue with his campaign. "I am in this race to win. We need a conservative Senate," said Akin on his Twitter.
