Stress in Adolescents

They stereotype potentially serious issues as an adolescent's over emotional and exaggerated fit. With puberty comes self-consciousness. Stress is often caused by negative body-image and bad self-esteem. Teenagers learn from magazines, television, and other media, that they have to be attractive, like Hollywood stars and models. For example, advertisements portray the woman's body as "in constant need of improvement; that women need to look young, 'beautiful,' made-up, sprayed up, very thin, and perfectly groomed."(Chevanu) When I first moved here to Chico when I was fourteen years old, I had a bad self-esteem. Because I just came from a remote area in Alaska, I didn't have the style that many kids here had. I had 'funny' clothes and I didn't know how to fix my hair nicely. Compared to all the tan, stylish Californian girls, I saw myself as an ugly looser. This is when I first started cutting. I had a tough time adapting to this new life style. Teenagers worry about how they look and often focus too much on flaws. Carrie Landa explored the relationship between self-image discrepancy and eating disorders. Because of the negative body-image and the desire to get thinner, teen girls get stressed and often engage in eating disorders in order to feel better about themselves (Landa). This is a serious issue and it is caused by the media's influence on teenagers. They compete secretly at school at who can be more popular. If you don't have the right clothes, you aren't welcome to talk to any 'cool' kids. The years that turn a child into a young adult are not to be taken lightly. .

School is another contributor in a youth's stress level. Task-induced stress has a lot of negative effects. If a student is overloaded in homework and studying, this can cause "loss of task interest "(Matthews). My junior year in high school was a difficult year. I was enrolled in two AP classes along with physics and Pre-calculus.
