The Right to Die - Doctor Assisted Suicide

The right for a patient with a terminal illness to request a doctor or medical professional assist them in ending his/her life is obviously, a very controversial topic. Some believe that the act of helping a terminally sick person die isn't immoral, but a kind and understanding act of compassion. Opponents of the issue feel that assisting anyone in taking their own life is immoral in that it violates religious beliefs. .
In "Terminal Illness Sufferers should be Allowed Help to Die," by" John-Paul Ford Rojas of Britain's "The Daily Telegraph," argues that patients should be allowed doctor assisted suicide. Rojas points out that the minister thought it was absurd that people have to travel abroad in order to end their lives. He indicates that if a person was to end their life with the help of a doctor, the doctor would be subject to up to fourteen years imprisonment. Rojas feels that no one with a terminal illness should have to suffer and explains that most people would rather end their lives than continue to suffer. One might observe that the law regarding doctor assisted suicide need to be reevaluated. Rojas is correct in his thinking. If someone has a terminal illness and wishes to have an assisted and painless suicide, they should be allowed to do that. In actuality, it shows compassion for the patient because they no longer have to suffer. Giving them an option of suicide is a morally correct option. One might conclude that the laws regarding doctor assisted suicide need to be modified (Terminal Illness Sufferers Should be Allowed Help to Die).
In the article "Assisted Suicide,"" Kate Picket argues the idea of doctor assisted suicide. She points out that most people feel it violates a biblical commandment. That commandment is: Thou Shalt Not Kill. Picket feels that it should be the decision of the patient rather than the law. She indicates that other countries have legalized doctor assisted suicide, so the United States should as well.
