This side of him was his unconscious, a second part of him. Ged battles his unconscious, letting the safety of all of Earthsea become endangered.
In the beginning of Le Guin's story, "A Wizard of Earthsea," talks to a girl, named Serret. He felt that her presence was worthy, wanting her acceptance. Sadly, he thought her very atrocious, but had the desire to satisfy her. To me, if you have the desire to please, you are either attracted to the person, or he/she is your boss. "Ged thought her very ugly, but has the desire to please her, to win her admiration, that grew on him as they talked" (Le Guin, 22). This quote means that Ged has a growing wish for her approval. This symbolizes Ged's shadow growing, although you can not physically see the shadow, Ged adds to it, making it stronger. All-in-all, Ged hides his sexuality inside himself, inside his unconscious, until he later meets her in the book. .
Being in the presence of one of the greatest wizards in all of Earthsea, you should feel unstoppable, but not Ged. Ged felt he was not being taught power, which is true, he was being taught wisdom and silence. In the novel, Ged fails to find genuine meanings and true powers, only caring about himself. Ged left Ogion for power, to feel worthy and to succeed. "How am I to know these things, when you teach me nothing? Since I lived with you, I have done nothing, seen nothing" (Le Guin, 25). In retrospect, Ged feels he is useless and his talent is wasted. This event symbolizes Ged, arrogantly ignoring his love for Ogion, and once-again adding to his shadow. Finally, I feel that if Ged realized his true master he would have conquered his unconscious in a better, safer and quicker way.
Environmental planning means to change your environment, to make it less threatening, this was Ged's objective when he went to Roke and met Jasper. Jasper posed a threat to Ged, and made him feel unworthy.
