Values Analysis - The Boy in the Porcelain Unicorn

 

Him and his friends open a window and break into a building. It is the same building that the elderly gentleman was seeking in his later years. The fact that the boy broke into the building with his friends suggests that he values wayward behavior. .
             The boys waywardly behavior continues as they rough house and look through the contents of the building. A loud noise comes from a near-by closet and the closet door opens. The boys flea, with the exception of the main character. The boy chooses to stay and examine the closet suggesting that he values curiosity and courage. When he opens the closet door he sees movement and decides to pull out a lighter to see with. He enters the closet and finds a young girl hiding in the corner. A few possessions surround her. They are dirty, as is she, and suggests that she has been in hiding for some time. The girl is holding a small white unicorn and she hands it to the boy. She says, "It's a unicorn." The boy examines it which is a demonstration of his compassion. It is evidently important to the girl and he chooses to treat it with respect as he examines it instead of being disinterested or tossing it aside.
             The boy notices the Star of David on the girl's jacket. The Star of David was used by the Nazi's during the Holocaust as a way of identifying Jews. It is obvious that the girl is Jewish. He tells her, "I've never seen one up close before." His value of waywardly behavior is expressed again in the mere fact that he engages in conversation with the girl. He was undoubtedly taught that Jews were the enemy. He undeniably would suffer grave punishment for engaging in conversation with a Jew and not reporting her to the authorities right away. It is a true testament that he values courage and waywardly behavior.
             At this time, the boy hears the Nazi's coming and tells the girl to, "Get Away." It is .
             obvious that he values the girl's life.
