Short Story - Could You Pull the Switch?

His name was Kyle Rodgers, 28 years old, living in Union, Connecticut. Union was a very small town with about 700 residents. Kyle grew up in a loving home with two older brothers. He didn't have much, but he was always happy. At school he wasn't popular. He often got picked on and didn't have much going for him. Around 24 years old he met the girl of his dreams, wed her, and eventually had two children. He was a good father and never did anything wrong. A few years down the road Kyle's family went bankrupt, so he needed more money to help sustain his family. When Kyle was 26 years old, he began robbing local stores and gas stations. He rationalized in his own mind, "I am only doing this to provide for my family; I don't intend to hurt anyone." He never thought twice about the consequences that could arise or getting caught. He was just a desperate father needing money to provide for his family.
He was a natural getting in and out quickly of convenience stores without leaving any evidence. One night he decided to go on one more robbing expedition at a local gas station before ending this hobby and starting a new life. It was about one o'clock in the morning when Kyle arrived at his destination. He burst through the door with gun in hand and pointed it straight at the cashier like he had done so many times before. Kyle screamed aggressively at the man, "Lay on the floor and don't try anything stupid!" Kyle grabbed the money from the register and started to run out with no problems. The cashier then pulled a gun out from the counter and shot at Kyle with the bullet grazing his head. Nerve shaken, Kyle quickly turned around on reflex, raised his gun, and shot the cashier twice in the chest. Blood splattered everywhere and began trickling on the ground. Though the whole sequence of events only took a few seconds, it all seemed to be in slow motion.
             The atmosphere instantly grew quite.
