Parents and Parental Involvement

The attendance at other school events, such as pupil concerts, shows, or open days, is lower, but 36 percent of the parents attend every time " (553). Parents seem be make appearances at events where they are invited as a way to make sure to support their kids and to celebrate progress. This is well like by students as J. Kevin Barge and William E. Loges notes: "Effective parental involvement, from a student perspective, means that parents should come to school and participate in school activities " (151). While student may sometimes be embarrassed by parental visits, they enjoy them as a good opportunity. Students feel that parents should be involved in their school life. Barge and Loges later stated: "children take note when parents miss these occasions " (151). When I was a student, I was always a little disappointed if my mother could not make it to a school concert. While she did make it to most of them, the few she had to miss where noticed. .
Parental involvement seems to be done because parents feel it is one of the basic requirements of parenthood, parents also have many tools that allow them to be great for reinforcing material and creating real life situations to help their children with what they are learning in school. As Michael Adams of BYU states: "parents appreciated the communication provided by home note, both informing them on what was being taught and encouraging them to reinforce skills " (120). Parents have the benefit of knowing their kids well and how to help them. When schools work with parents to keep them involved, it helps create a team that allows the school and parents to work together for education. This can be very helpful as students receiving help from two sources can work in different environments to help with their schooling. When this help in real and meaningful, students can learn a lot. As Barge and Loges reported in their journal: "one student talked about how his parents made up math problems by having him go to the sports page and, using the box scores from baseball games, calculate batting averages " (105).
