The disability checks came in handy for personal use because she lived rent free in a house that the family owned, and wasn't paying for her medication although she never took it. Lucy Williams was an ex drug addict and alcoholic but no matter what she made time for her son despite her difficulties, she was considered a survivor. Later on in the story, we find out that Lucy had an older son named Albert who was severely handicapped and died from a respiratory ailment, then years later she was blessed with Wesley at the age 37. " Pregnant with her first son, Albert, born severely handicapped but the boy had died when he was nine from a respiratory ailment that came out of nowhere and killed him in two days " (197). After the death and mistakes after her first son, Lucy wanted to change so she decided to keep Wesley.
Wesley Williams is the son of Lucy and nephew of SJ. Wesley is 19 years and described as a young man who had a smart mouth and manly attitude. "Wesley had a quick mouth and a mannish attitude, but he was alright"" (9). Due to his mother's drug addiction while pregnant with him, he was dyslexic and was slightly hyperactive. Although, Lucy was not always there for him, Wesley still loved his mother no matter what. SJ acts as Wesley's father figure since he didn't know his biological father and because of that he tries to instill hardworking values into his nephew. Wesley loved his uncle too, but he felt like his uncle was suffocating him and he wanted to get away from that. Wesley who was only taught "Basic " skills didn't know how to act in the real world and for that he didn't want to end up like his uncle. He wanted freedom. .
The day before the storm hit SJ spent his day preparing for the storm by putting up plywood at homes of residents. Like any other Hurricane, many residents of the Lower Ninth Ward thought that Hurricane Katrina wasn't going to do anything because any other time there was a Hurricane nothing ever happened.
