During this time, knowledge and learning is a focus for the students and teachers. Time is spent in different lessons by the teacher, on individual work, projects with classmates, and in knowledge-based activities. Are children being best helped in a public school setting with these interventions?.
Autism Speaks, an organization to research and develop ways to help children and parents dealing with Autism, provided steps on the best way to develop social and cognitive skills. Those steps include building strong relationships, an inclusive environment, and providing activities that align with individual students interests. One specific example from these steps provided by Autism Speaks is to extend a very welcoming and loving feeling into every new room or area the students may go such as the lunch room, or gym ("Autism Speaks"). Taking those extra steps to help develop social and cognitive skills can be extremely beneficial in children with autism. .
Some public schools have taken leaps and bounds to improve their accommodations for autistic students including speech, occupational, and behavioral therapies. However, there are a very limited number of programs and therapies available to students in public schools. Students with autism do not need the academic approach that many public schools take, in order to receive government funding, but are in need of help in navigating social interactions. These programs can be helpful with students needing the extra help if the school provides them. Another disabling feature may be that very few teachers have the knowledge and training to best help these students succeed. Teachers can play a vital role in helping these students become more socially included in school. .
Students with autistic spectrum disorder tend to have a very low self-esteem and perception of themselves. A study was done where 20 autistic students in a public school were to participate in an interview on their thoughts and feelings.
