Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood

"What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another"- Mahatma Gandi. That is a similar comparison to what Margaret Atwood has created in her novel Oryx and Crake where the people of the world are greedy enough that they will destroy the Earth to the point where it is unrecognizable. She demonstrates this through human manipulation of nature, the immense changes in climate and the plan to eradicate all humans. .
The human manipulation of nature really begins with animals, the pigoon project is all an elaborate plan in order to benefit society.
"The goal of the pigoon project was to grow an assortment of foolproof human-tissue .
organs in a transgenic knock out pig host-organs that would transplant smoothly and .
avoid rejection" ( Atwood 27). Despite the project claiming to be foolproof many pigoons are created poorly and could not be simply turned into bacon for food. This is just a wasted animal taken away by science for no purpose. " it took a lot of food and care to grow a pigoon" (Atwood 28) with a project that is not 100% working and it taking a lot of time and effort to process this is all just a scheme that uses the pigs and simply uses them as guinea pigs to benefit themselves. This shows how the humans in the novel are willing to harm a species for their own personal benefits. .
The Chickienobs are an experiment that really shows the amount of respect the people have towards animals. " But there aren't any heads" (Atwood 246) "No eyes or beak or anything they don't need those" (Atwood 246). This "animal" they are experimenting on is really just their guinea pig, it has no face and can not do anything on its own. It is just another human experimentation taking away the animals' right to live freely. " The whole world is now one vast uncontrolled experiment" (Atwood 275). The world has been corrupted by humans for their own benefits blinded by what is occurring around them, it all started small with animals but is now taking global effects.
