ADHD and Child Development

ADHD's effects in Child Development Steele 1.
ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a very common neuropsychiatric disorder that affects many children worldwide, and can continue on through adolescence and even into adulthood. Though there are many treatments for this disorder, there is no cure at this time. Some teachers and parents may view children with ADHD as problem children, but this is not always the case. With proper treatment and help, children with this disorder can be very successful in life.
Some major symptoms of this disorder "include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity)" (NIMH, 2012. Para 1). Symptoms of ADHD make it very difficult for children to be successful in school, as well as many other aspects of their daily lives. Some symptoms that can cause problems at home and school include disorganization and forgetfulness. Other symptoms "such as low self-esteem, aggressiveness, and emotional immaturity play a major role in how a child and family adapt to ADHD being part of daily life" (Bailey, 2014. Pg 1). Symptoms of ADHD may make it difficult to succeed in school, but that has nothing to do with the child's intelligence.
School is not an easy thing for children with ADHD for many different reasons. Difficulty with their ability to pay attention is a major symptom of ADHD. This can cause problems for a child when a teacher is giving out homework assignments because it is hard for the child to pay attention to one certain thing. ADHD causes children to focus on everything going on instead of paying attention to a teacher when they are talking. Forgetfulness, another common symptom of ADHD, can cause a child to forget important things like test days, certain details for homework assignments, and when different projects need to be turned in.
