The scene showed the struggle and all the emotions Sonny struggled with. During the performance at the club, the narrator sends his brother a cup of trembling, which refers to the Scotch and milk. As the story ends, that final moment showed the growth and chance of redemption for Sonny. .
Many people argue that the foundation for Sonnys Blues was on the basis of the story of Cain and Abel. The idea is not too far-fetched and with good reason. James Baldwin grew up in a Christian church and based a lot of his writings on his morals and beliefs. It was not uncommon for writers during the time to use their personal experiences and lessons from the Bible to shape their works; they indeed can be seen to be very similar in characteristics, themes, and meanings.
In summary of this Biblical Story, the two brothers are born to the parents of Adam and Eve. Cain worked as a farmer and Abel watched the flocks, looking after the familys herd. In an offering to God, Abel offered his best lamb to God, while Cain offered fruit of the land. God was pleased with Abels selfless sacrifice but felt that Cain had not given his best. Cain grew angry and began to hate his brother Abel for feeling that God loved him more. In haste, Cain invited his brother for a walk and slew him. When the Lord spoke to Cain asking where his brother was, he responded saying, I dont know. Am I my brothers keeper? Consequently, God punished Cain for murdering Abel, declaring that he would never be able to produce crops again. Cain felt that his punishment was far too much for him to bear, and he feared that he would become a wanderer and be killed shortly thereafter. The Lord gave Cain mercy, putting a mark on him so that he would be protected in all circumstances. Cain moved east of Eden to the Land of Nod, married and had a son named Enoch.
Thinking about the relationship of which the brothers were born into in both stories are a representation of good and evil.
