Have you ever done something you know in your heart is right, even knowing you would be penalized for it? Many christians faced decisions like this after Jesus died. Now imagine you are one of those early christians who would most likely be killed in a terrible, painful way if you stood up for what you believed Christians in. Would you still do it? Saint Sebastian's did it not once, but twice; even after nearly escaping death, he believed in the power of God and continued his calling even if it meant he would be losing his life.
Saint Sebastian was born in Narbonne,Gaul and is considered to be a double martyr. The reason for this is Diocletian's first attempt was not successful. Diocletian was the Roman Emperor of the time that had his men martyr St. Sebastian. The first attempt at Sebastian's life occurred when he had arrows shot at him. Afterward, they left him there to die, but he survived and was nursed back to health by a woman named Irene of Rome, the widow of Saint Castulus. When Sebastian was once again healthy he returned once again to preach to Diocletian about Christ and as a result was beaten to death. Saint Sebastian is the patron saint of many things such as archers, soldiers, and athletes.
I chose this martyr because he is the patron saint of athletes. I have been in sports since I was around four years old so I feel a connection to him. Also, when I went to Maltrait we had an All Saints Day in which we would dress pertaining to a certain saint. For this is day, I always dressed up in one of my uniforms knowing that Saint Sebastian was the patron of sports. Also, because of his physical endurance and his energetic way of spreading and defending the faith, I feel as though he is a fantastic role model. Even though someone may have hurt you, you do not have to retaliate; just love them as Christ would want us too.
Yes, someone has performed an act of self-giving love for me.
