This leads to people repeating the same values creating a stronger collective conscious. Collective conscious is when everyone thinks the same way and their norms and values are the same. His theory suggested that crime has a bigger impact changing society, apartheid in South Africa and homosexuality, which was legalized in 1917, are few examples to support his theory. Crime is inevitable which means that no one will ever agree on the same thing especially if your living in a multi cultured society. However, that does not mean crime is not normal in fact when the collective conscious is weakened a state of anomie is developed due to people looking after what interest them, therefore, individualism could be seen as a source of crime and deviant behavior. Anomie is when individuals do not know what to do with them and they do not know the state of normlessness. Riots is an example of anomie and collective conscious, the riot in 2010 almost created a moral panic where people came together not for the right reason but because it was something everyone was doing. Although, it looks like the society is on its failure it can't be represented for the whole society but only the people who have committed those crimes or the system who only acknowledge certain crimes.
However Official Statistics do not have a high representativeness, due to the high amount of crimes that are unreported or unrecorded. Crimes such as rape and domestic violence are under reported because the victim may feel embarrassed or too scared or even because there is a lack of evidence that would make it hard to prosecute the perpetrator. Also of all crime that is reported only 47% of it is recorded by the police. Marxists focus on this negative side of Official Statistics, saying that they are biased towards the working class. The working class is more likely to get arrested and go to jail then the upper/middle class, as they cannot afford to pay their bail.
