Themes of Wisdom in A River Runs Through It

 

" Norman has spent his entire life chasing answers, only to find more questions, on a continuum of mental battles. From the depths of the waters, Norman has inadvertently evoked both a power previously unknown, and a solace to be savored. The solace soon perishes to the arrow of speculation, but the wisdom endures. This is seen when Norman characterizes the anatomy of the river, "it was made up of sharp angles. It ran seemingly straight for a while, then met another obstacle, again was turned sharply and ran smoothly." The realization mirrors reality, in which a sudden epiphany leads to a new direction; but soon an obstacle is beheld, a new epiphany emerges, and a new direction arises once more. Analogous to the cycle of life continuing until the throes of death present the ultimate obstacle. Norman's acquisition of this wisdom, serves as a template upon which his transition from analysis, to artistry may take place. It is indeed this wisdom, this calling in the natural order, that places his thoughts and his emotions in sync with the laws of nature.
             Throughout his life, Norman gains the internal strength to open the shell of his confining cocoon. He is able to depart from his past of speculation, and embark upon a journey of grace and refinement. Evident while fishing with Paul, this gradual process is showcased as Norman observes, "It was here that I started this story, [one which] had begun long ago near the sound of water. And I sensed that ahead I would meet something that would never erode so that there would be a sharp turn, deep circles, a deposit, and quietness." Norman conjures a profound understanding of the stages of life that had not occurred to him before. He accepts that upon recognition of these stages, "The steadfast cycle of obstacle succeeded by epiphany succeeded by new direction, and then all over again a fundamental mastery emerges that transcends all further obstacles.
