Sia and the Elastic Heart Controversy

Social media and other networks in the technological world such as Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr have a huge impact on what is accepted or denied in society. One example is the famous pop star Sia, known for her number one hit song "Titanium." She recently released a new music video called "Elastic Heart," which features her interpretive dancers, Maddie Ziegler from the well known show "Dance Mom's," and actor Shia LaBeouf known for countless movies such as "Transformers" and the more recent "Fury." This music video has not only sparked interest but also negative comments that mainly include pedophilia, which has spread all over the entertainment news. .
Sia's "Elastic Heart" video has Shia LaBeouf and Maddie Ziegler as interpretive dancers, dancing in nude colored leotards in a zoo like cage. This video has reached ninety-three million views in three weeks according to YouTube. No one really knows what the video is about but according to comments under the YouTube video, it could be an artistic way of showing her emotional connection with her father. It could also be why there is a huge age gap between Dance Mom's Maddie Ziegler and actor Shia LaBeouf. The video is supposed to entertain and grab the audience with the emotion behind the interpretive dancers. However not everyone had that interpretive perspective.
According to Rolling Stone's columnist Kory Grow, the video became controversial because of negative feedback suggesting Maddie Ziegler and Shia LaBeouf's contact with each other displayed signs of pedophilia. Pedophilia is a sexual disorder when an adult commits sexual acts with a child with the same or opposite gender ("Pedophilia"). The controversy probably would not have started if Sia chose a similar age difference with Maddie Ziegler or Shia LaBeouf. According to Huffington Post's columnist Diane Passage, she sees there is more to the music video than what the eye beholds.
