The attitudes towards the aging of women has become increasingly popular, but not in a positive way. Older women have now become self-conscious of their body changing, and realize that youth is the new beautiful. A lot of these women have undergone plastic surgery, bought anti-aging cream, died their hair, etc., in order to look young again. My research will prove that these negative attitudes of aging women are real and it's only the beginning. I will use plenty of sources to provide examples, and proof, of my major ideas, and come up with a few ideas on how to end this discrimination against older women. .
Feminist Theory.
I will use the liberal feminist theory, because it stresses how there is a need for equality between men and women. There are not a lot of advertisements for anti-aging products for men, mainly only hair products (Ex. Getting grey hair and using hair dye made for men). However, for women, there are hundreds of products and forms of media that are for women who are aging. Therefore, using the liberal feminist theory, I can argue how we should encourage forms of media to treat older women exactly how older men are treated, in order to fight for gender equality.
3 Course Concepts: Monolithic beauty; ageism; body projects (Rice, 2013).
Monolithic Beauty.
White, able body, heterosexual, middle class notions of the idealized beauty that is stressed upon in the Western culture. The goal of this concept is to simply be beautiful, sexy, and alluring. Monolithic beauty can be viewed from the past to present, because it is constructed and is constantly changing. An example of monolithic beauty from the past is Marilyn Monroe, and in the present it is a Victoria's Secret Angel. I will use this concept by explaining how women believe beauty is value, and that we value youth (Ex. A lot of women use teeth whitening, Botox, plastic surgery, etc.). When women age, they will tend to do anything in order to keep their youth, whether that means to undergo some sort of surgery, or purchase and use anti-aging creams to prevent wrinkles.
