Real Minority, Media Majority by Salim Muwakkil

Therefore, Muwakkil describes how reporters are to use stereotypes to convey different news related events. For example, he uses an encounter with a newscaster that had dealt with an event regarding it. The newscaster explains, "I'll never forget the time a news director sent a camera crew out to tape some welfare mothers in public housing, and one of our rebellious black cameramen chose to tape white mothers at one of the city's few integrated public housing projects" (92). Muwakkil goes on to talk about how infuriated the director was towards the cameramen. He describes how the news media favors traditional stereotypes for the sake of their audience. In history, before the news media, newspapers would describe blacks in the 1900s as "brutes," "savages," "imbeciles," and "moral degenerates" (93). Muwakkil indicates that this has been a problem for many years and seems to keep going and growing. Literature during that time was meant to devalue the character and race of blacks and credit the white Americans such as the Ku Klux Klan. Muwakkil writes that the news mainly protected whites and portrayed blacks in a negative aspect. .
School was another important issue that is dominated by stereotypes. Muwakkil talks about how children are being portrayed in school. Most whites in news are associated with positive qualities. For example, Muwakkil describes a study from a children's rights organization about children's own depictions of good students and bad students. "Children most often associate positive qualities- financial and academic success, leadership, intelligence- with whites and associate negative qualities-lawbreaking, financial hardship, laziness, goofy behavior- with minorities, particularly blacks" (93). Muwakkil is clearly stating that the youth have been affected by stereotypes. He proves that this is a negative aspect because it causes the youth to believe that it is correct to judge people based off of their race.
