Discrimination and Sexual Orientation

There was also a speech from a group called Fred Phelps' Baptist Church that spoke of anti-gay and anti-LGBT hate that seemed to have gotten the attention of a lot of people in the United States, including those in the business world. These kinds of business owners let it affect their businesses in a multitude of different ways (Barret-Fox, 2010.) This has caused workers in the LGBT community to be looked at differently in the workplace.
Even though much of the government and even people themselves are driven by religion and even susceptible to the tarnishing words of hate that people speak, legally, people of the LGBT community are protected in many states and even in some ways, but not wholly, at the federal level (Tilcsik, 2011 p 601-602). Looking at the protection that this community has, we can look at the Bill of Rights and the unalienable rights to all citizens of the United States. While everyone has the rights that are given to us by this document, there is no specific clause in the Constitution that protects those of the LGBT community due to the fact that when it was drafted, it was blasphemous to be considered homosexual (Wintermute, 2002). .
As a country, we have had many civil rights struggles that have caused the United States to go into a state of turmoil, just as the right for women's rights and the rights of African American's have. In today's age, it is the struggle for those in the LGBT community to get the rights that they feel they deserve. This struggle led to the drafting and signing of anti-discrimination laws all across the United States, but even with these anti-discrimination laws, the government has not deemed that LGBT community a class that is to be protected by the federal government (Wintermute, 2002). Due to this, there is no protection for those of the LGBT community who are subjected to the type of discrimination that this country has seen throughout our history with many different groups of people.
