Water Filtration Lab Report

The Parker Street and New State Road Wells are treated to get rid of low levels of volatile organic compounds. The water from the reservoirs is piped to the water treatment plant on Spring Street. The water is processed before it is sent into the water distribution system. The treatment process includes zonation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration to remove impurities and disinfection to kill microbes that can cause illness. The zonation processes were added to improve taste and odor. It is there to also provide an additional barrier of protection against waterborne disease carrying organisms. Lime is added to raise the pH and zinc phosphate. It is added to prevent corrosion of plumbing. The CT Department of Health requires that fluoride be added to help prevent tooth decay for people who drink the water. .
             Brita Filter .
The Brita filter has the capacity of 10 (8 ounce glasses). The Pacifica filter has the capacity of 10 (8 ounce glasses). It has an improved filter fit that is BPA-free. Brita reduces the taste and odor of chlorine, and other contaminants, to better tasting water. It removes impurities that can cause illness over time. Scientists at Brita have worked to give healthier and great tasting water. The Brita pitcher filter uses technology that uses coconut-based activated carbon with ion exchange resin in a BPA free "housing". The materials work together to reduce chlorine taste and odor, zinc, and harmful contaminants copper, mercury and cadmium. .
             Brita removes:.
Zinc: Exposure to zinc can cause nausea & vomiting, and long-term effects of anemia & pancreatic damage.
Cadmium: Exposure to cadmium can cause liver damage.
Chlorine: Chlorine leaves a bad taste & odor in your tap water.
Copper: Exposure to copper can cause gastrointestinal distress and liver & kidney damage.
Mercury: Mercury from landfills can lead to kidney damage over time.
Brita pours through filters to remove impurities from tap water through the science of adsorption.
