Overview of Servant Leadership

The authors further teach that a leader can be defined as one who leads or influences other individuals to achieve particular objectives and that these perspectives apply to transformational leading (organizational or system-level leading) as well as transactional leading (leading at the level of managers, individuals and groups) theories[ CITATION Bea14 l 1033 ]. One can reasonably contend the perspectives can also apply to other leadership theories and styles. Studying the various perspectives and materials on servant and other leadership styles and their associated characteristics, causes me to reflect on my professional path to leadership as well as my path in shaping the individual I have become today. Reviewing recommended goals to improve, grow and serve will be part of my journey to be a better leader.
Characteristics and Comparisons – Servant versus Other Leadership Styles.
According to James Autry, if you can attain the characteristics of authenticity, vulnerability, acceptance, presence and usefulness to become a servant leader, then that is the highest manifestation of your spirituality in the context of work [ CITATION Aut01 l 1033 ]. Autry contends there are five ways of being that will move you toward an attitude of service and as a result, toward the most meaningful expression of your spirituality at work: Be Authentic (or consistently be yourself), Be Vulnerable (or be honest with your feelings, doubts, concerns, mistakes made, etc.), Be Accepting (accept ideas themselves, not who they came from), Be Present (think about the current and concentrate) and Be Useful (service and be a resource)[ CITATION Aut01 l 1033 ]. Another author offers that the following consistent characteristics and traits become a way of life for a servant leader: giving praise and feedback, great communicator and listener, constantly training people and team building, delegates to empower their people, serves with humility, shows patience, is aware and honest about their weaknesses and typically has God as the foundation for their lives[CITATION Bil11 l 1033 ].
