            D Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye has had ongoing success which is largely credited to Holden Caulfield's complex character. The book explores different universal themes and ideas. A complex character is one that is more than one-dimensional and is able to change and adjust their attitude and behaviour according to the situation. Their personality often has many dimensions. Salinger is able to create such as diverse and complex character through the use of several literary devices. These literary devices portray the personality and the complexity of Holden's character to the reader. The author effectively uses symbolism throughout the novel which assists in developing the complexity of Holden. Holden's cynical and jaded voice also allows the reader to empathise and relate to the narrator. Holden's very peculiar and distinctive voice is unfamiliar to most readers, enabling the audience to see him as a different and unique character. Finally the use of hyperbole gives the reader the impression that Holden is an intelligent and sensitive individual, who is emotionally disturbed and dissatisfied. The exploration of Holden's thoughts provides an insight into the character's complexity, and thus engaging the reader, contributing to the novel's continual success. .
             Salinger incorporates symbolism throughout the text, which helps to develop the complexity of Holden's character. One of the main symbols used in the novel, is the red hunting hat. Salinger uses Holden's red hunting hat as a symbol of uniqueness and individuality. The hat is outlandish and it portrays Holden's desire to be different from everyone around him. It also represents his need for security, while also representing his mixed emotions on acceptance, alienation and conformity. As seen in the quote "I put on this red Hunting Hat that I'd bought that morning. at a sports store right after I lost those foils." Holden uses the hat as a symbol of security.
