Issues of Trust in Hamlet

 

            
             In society trust is an important element in any relationship. The play Hamlet by William Shakespeare revolves around the issue of trust. Hamlet's father has been murdered. His father's ghost comes back revealing his murder. Hamlet's emotional turmoil gains momentum when he realizes Claudius has murdered his father. Hamlet then begins to make plots to kill Claudius. People in the play could not always be trusted on the decision that they made. The play demonstrates Hamlet's insecurity in implementing his plan. It illustrates how the need for status supersedes integrity and ethical values.
             The poor choices people tend to make, allows them not to be trusted. Hamlet is in the church with Claudius about to kill him: To take him in a the purging of his soul, When he is fit and season'd for his passage? No. Up, sword, and know thou a more horried hent, (Act 3:4 85-88) Hamlet is behind Claudius as he is praying for forgives to God. It is a perfect timing for Hamlet to seek his revenge against Claudius without him knowing what he is about to get. Hamlet makes a poor decision when he decides to back out to kill Claudius when he is praying for forgiveness. Trust was not used by Hamlet for getting the whole truth about his father's death and tends to believe his father's ghost. Hamlet's only proof is Claudius reaction towards the play then asking him about his father death. It shows that Hamlet does not have trust in Claudius and all he wants is revenge. This encouraged him to makes terrible decision while he is seeking his revenge. Claudius confides in Laertes: Hamlet comes back: what would you undertake, To show yourself in deed your father's son More than in words? (Act 4:7 124-126) Laertes is outraged about what Hamlet has done to his father. He wants to get back at Hamlet for killing his father and is willing to do anything to achieve this end. Laertes is teaming up with Claudius to make plans against Hamlet to kill him a in dual with poison on his sword.
