The Hedonistic Viewpoint

In this thought experiment there are two universes that are exactly the same. There is just one person in each universe that is delusional. They both believe that their world is filled with people, but those people are all suffering. In universe A, the person receives pleasure from their suffering. In universe B, the suffering saddens the person. Which universe would you live in? Universe A delivers more pleasure, but which universe is the morally right one to choose? This thought experiment creates a dilemma with whether it is right to choose your happiness even though it comes from suffering. A hedonist would choose universe A because it generates more hedons, despite them being generated from others suffering. Others might choose universe B because they might believe it is wrong to gain pleasure from suffering. A reasoning against universe B is the knowledge of the suffering to be a delusion, or the fact that choosing universe A implies that you do not realize gaining pleasure from others' suffering is wrong, so they would not have to live with the guilt. No matter whether it is wrong to gain pleasure from people's suffering or not, one is not obligated to subject himself to a life of sadness because of something out of his control. Hedonism's position on the Happy Sadist thought experiment is morally correct. .
Another well worn thought experiment used when discussing hedonism is the Experience Machine. New technology allows for a person to experience unlimited pleasure. Once a person is attached to the machine, he can experience anything he puts his mind to. Anything and everything is possible in the experience machine. For example, if someone enjoys hunting, that person can hunt all day long, from sunrise to sunset. Ones possibilities in this machine are endless. To become attached to this machine, doctors must remove your brain from the rest of your body, place you in a vat and begin the program.
