Once I realized these codes, I created three main themes that I felt described what Jack was trying to paint a picture of to me.
Importance of Family.
Jack was very intriguing to listen to when he would allow me into his world that involves soccer. It really hit home for me when he started talking about family being probably the biggest or at least first reason he started kicking a soccer ball around. This drew me into the interview because it reminded me of when I was a kid and my dad first putting a bat in my hand for baseball and all the countless hours we spent out on the field together. That is the idea I got when I listened to Jack discuss how he grew up playing with his older brothers and the love they showed him for the game of soccer. When asking Jack what inspired him to play soccer, he replied "Uhm well, my brothers played soccer and my family is very into sports, like actively into sports. My dad played sports growing up, so he wanted us to play sports growing up. All my brothers played before me and I don't know, they kinda just through me out there and it ended up being something I liked and I stuck with it." Families can really get brought tighter because of common involvement in sports. I started getting the vibe that soccer really meant a lot to him when he was talking about his family because he started smiling as he was telling me about his older brothers maybe playing a little too rough on him when he was younger. .
Emotions are hard to pick up when reading a transcript of an interview, but I can tell you that when he was speaking about family and the importance it had on the influence of him playing soccer, I could really tell this was a huge part of why he is still playing soccer and it really meant a lot to him. I know that if it weren't for my family, there is no way in hell I'm still playing college baseball here at CSUEB. Besides the help they give me with money for school and living, the sheer love and support of coming out to my games and never putting that over the top pressure on me to succeed is what I am so thankful for.
