Science Research Lab - Biomass

Biomass is organic material made from plants and animals. Biomass contains stored energy from the sun. Plants absorb the sun's energy in a process called photosynthesis. When biomass is burned, this stored energy is released as heat. Biomass is a renewable energy source because we can always grow more trees and crops, and waste will always exist. Many different kinds of biomass, such as woods chips, corn, and some types of garbage, are used to produce electricity. Some types of biomass can be converted into liquid fuels called biofuels that can power cars, trucks, and tractors. Leftover food products like vegetable oils and animal fats can create biodiesel, while corn, sugarcane, and other plants can be fermented to produce ethanol. The production and the use of biomass also bring additional environmental and social benefits. Some good reasons to use biomass as a sustainable fuel: correctly managed, biomass is a sustainable fuel that can offer a significant reduction in net carbon emissions compared with fossil fuels, biomass can be sourced locally, on an indefinite basis, contributing to security of supply and Woodlands, forestry and agriculture are generally perceived to be an environmentally and socially attractive comfort the Polish population, providing opportunities for recreation and leisure activities. Some of the way is considered to reduce the growth in greenhouse gases by the use of biomass is when, the burning biomass create clean electricity releases no new carbon into the atmosphere. Instead it releases what would be released naturally as the organic matter decomposed. .
So, by burning biomass fuels we release no more carbon dioxide than would have been produced in any case by natural processes such as crop and plant decay. And, provided our consumption of biomass does not exceed our ability to continually supply the biomass feedstock we use, we have a renewable energy source whose use does not substantially disturb the natural biochemical cycle on a human time scale.
