Sylvia Landry - Within Our Gate

 

Landry to the chair. He thought this country was of white man, and they controlled it. The black was still slave as his father time. .
             The conversation was interrupted when a poor white man with a gun in the window, who was called a "Poor White Trash, no better than Negro" shot and killed Gridlestone while Mr. Landry was still there. Although Efrem, Gridlestone's servant, was in another window, and did not see the situation, he still accused that Mr. Landry was a murder. He went around and spread the news for white people. Efrem believed that he was with white. By this event, Micheaux started show the violence of white mob to black. The white mob lynched Efrem when they could not find Landry's family. The lynching of Efrem was clearly an example of the white mob's violence to black. Micheaux tried to show that the white mob still thought the blacks were not equally rank with them in society. When something happened, blamed it all on black people, and killed them without any real reasons. Newspapers about the death of Efrem did not shock anyone that was just simply the way of life.
             The violence went to higher lever when they tried to catch and kill Landry's family. After a week hiding in the forest, Landry's family was captured by the white mob. Absolutely, the mob behaved terribly to the Landry's family, beat Jasper's wife, and took off her dress. Then, they were lynching Jasper's family by the road like a part of consumer culture that punished slave in the past. The violence went to the highest level when white mob pulled the lynching rod until Landry's family died, then, burned their dead bodies. While the lynching bodies were burning, in another place, Sylvia was getting harassed by Gridlestone's brother, who wanted to rape her. Micheaux push the violence of the mod to the top when he combined all horrible scenes of Mr. Landry's family in the same time. .
             Contrary to the tragedy of her family, Sylvia had a happy ending with her love.
