Compromise as a Solution to Conflict

 

            When facing difficult decisions and conflicts, some would resort to compromise as a solution, thinking it is the fast way to reach a consensus. However, compromise can only bring short-term benefits and it cannot be the best solution of any incompatibility. Only if one can face the problem and is willing to make changes or challenges, can one resolve difficulties for long. .
             Compromising can only exacerbate the existing problem, and fighting is the only way out. Atticus Finch, in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird is a case in point. In the time of racial discrimination, a black young man, Tom Robinson, is accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Controlled by the racial stereotype, no lawyer would like to defend Tom and to be thought as outliers. Nonetheless, Atticus Finch cannot help follow his moral and decides to defend Tom against the malignant accusation and racism. The process of resolving the conflict between "Tom and the world" is never easy; many of Maycomb's citizens disapprove his behavior, and even his family objects to his decision. Still, Mr. Finch never compromises with the racial belief of the society, and says that confrontation is the only way to solve the problem. In the end, Mr. Finch does prove Tom's innocence to the public although Tom was incarcerated due to his skin color. Mr. Finch does not achieve a big success but he made a fundamental contribution to a more equal society. As Mr. Finch shows, only if one can face the problem, can one truly resolve a conflict.
             This is also true in the actual world. Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric, did not compromise his original plan and successfully revived GE. When Welch took the office as CEO in 1981, the century-old company was on the decline due to its inefficient management method. The senior officials took complete control of everything, and the management was divided into 9 levels. Besides, the serious redundancy was eroding the corporation.
