Empathy in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Although, it almost seems like it is more important to own an animal than to take care of it. For example, Rick is assigned to retire the androids that have escaped to Earth. Excited about his bounty, Rick wants to earn enough to buy a big animal. It is easy to see that people tend to judge each other's social status by the value of their pet. Since Rick only wants to get a nice animal to raise his social status, it is debatable whether he cares about the animal itself. Before, Rick had a fake electric animal and was embarrassed that his animal was not real. Social status is more important to Rick than caring for the animal. Therefore, he lacks empathy. .
The biggest use of empathy in the novel is the use of the Voight-Kampff Empathy test. Rick uses this test multiple times to determine if a subject was an android. The test consisted of asking the subject a series of questions that would bring about empathy. If the reaction to a question changed the emotions of the subject in under a certain amount of time, the subject would pass that question as a human would. These emotions where measured by examining how much the subject's pupils dilate and how the subject responds. Androids are assumed to lack empathy, so they should not pass the test. However, the Nexus 6 models have proved to be much more like humans than older models. When Rick met Rachael for the first time, she thought she was a human. After Rick had given her the empathy test, she turned out to be an android. Later in the story, Rachael sets out on a mission to seduce Rick and prevent him from retiring the rogue androids. Rachael's actions hint that she empathizes with the other androids. She also builds up enough anger to kill Rick's new animal because Rick seems to love it more than his wife and her. It seems as if Rachael develops jealousy, which is further proof of her ability to feel emotion. .
Another example of an android that may have empathy is the opera house singer, Luba Luft.
