Looks Aren't Everything. Believe Me, I'm a Model.

In October of 2012, Cameron Russell gave a TED talk she entitled, "Looks Aren't Everything." Russell has spent the last ten years modeling-a Victoria's Secret favorite-ands has appeared in multiple international editions of Vogue as well as in ads for brands like Ralph Lauren. In the TED talk she discussed what it is like to be looked as a model, how her life has been impacted as a model and the process of how she became a model. One thing I really enjoyed in her TED talk was her main point: looks aren't everything! Yes being model does involve looks and body image a lot but she covers some very good points that there is more to a model than appearance. I chose this TED talk because I thought it was a very interesting and I personally wanted to know what the point of view is like for a model and why "looks were not everything", because up until this video I was also someone who thought that when one is a model looks are a huge priority. When Cameron first comes out, the stage is set up very plain, nothing but a red carpet. There is not much going on, and not too much background music is playing. She gives the impression that she is a model, wearing a tight dress and in heels she then does an outfit change right on the middle of the stage, when she first did this I was kind of confused but she then states the reasoning behind it being "Image is powerful, but also, image is superficial. I just totally transformed what you thought of me, in six seconds." Which then led me to thinking right off the bat she was not your stereotypical model. In this TED talk, Cameron Russell, the speaker, uses her personal experience, her tone, and statistics to bring awareness that looks are not everything and that we all feel more comfortable acknowledging the power of image. .
The targeted audience for this is TED talk can be toward anyone really; but it is mostly for women, and teenage girls that are concerned about their body and think that looks are all that matter.
