I have very little experience outside my research with graphic novels. I don't know very many people that have read graphic novels, but I do know that they can be found in the Public Library in Rapid City, and most schools. The only one I've read is deemed as one of the top five graphic novels (Must Own Graphic Novels, gearpatrol.com). The novel is called Persepolis, written and illustrated by Marjane Satrapi. My experience with Persepolis was very eye opening in the fact that I had never read a book that was able to make such an emotional impact on me and be written in the comic strip style. The art was also very riveting and emotional because it contained such intense imagery of what the narrator/author was describing but were drawn very simply. .
Persepolis is about the author's life in Iran before and during their revolution. The story follows the main character Marjane and her family as she changes from a peace loving little girl to a rebellious teenager obsessed with making change. It contains descriptions of a lot of the political tensions during the 1970's and 80's. The title is actually a reference to the capital of the Persian Empire, Persepolis, in 560 BCE (Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, gradesaver.com). Initially, I found it difficult to decide on a graphic novel because I was so unfamiliar with them, and had hundreds to choose from. I chose to read Persepolis because I was interested in how a graphic novel could be written in the format of a memoir and saw it mentioned on several of the lists for one of the top five graphic novels. .
The novel itself only took a couple of hours to read due to its comic strip format, but it was very enjoyable. I was able to really connect with the main character because of the fact that we are both young, ambitious, and strong women. In the book, it is mentioned how much Marjane went against the rules and stood up for her friends and family.
