Sunset Boulevard : The Definition of a Good Movie

In the end, Joe decides that enough is enough and decides to leave the relationship for good. On his way out, she shoots him which brings the audience back to the present day. Without the narrator, this movie would be nothing. As stated before, the narrator sets the tone and mood for the story and also informs the audience of how he is feeling. The superb writers of the movie also helped Joe Gillis become one of the most famous characters in cinema history. It is partly because of the use of narration that I liked this movie so much.
The unexpected twists and turns also make this to be one of the most interesting movies. The fact that basically the whole movie is a flashback makes it more interesting. In the beginning of the movie, you see Gillis dead, and you wonder how he became to be that way. You would have never guessed the plot of the movie by just watching the first fifteen minutes of the movie unlike many movies today. The movie is made in this way because it makes the audience curious and interested to see how Gillis ends up lifeless. To see the ending first sometimes makes a movie better because of the suspense factor that is involved. When Joe ends up moving in with Norma, that's when the drama ensues. You then later find out that Norma has suicidal tendencies, she is extremely jealous, and that the slightest thing could force her to do something uncontrollable. It is because of these plot twists that this movie is so interesting.
The writers also did a wonderful job by creating interesting characters that seemed as if they were real life people. Joe Gillis on the outside seems like a very cold and morose person, but he is actually a very smart, sarcastic, and loving person. Norma Desmond is a million people all rolled into one. I believe the correct term to use is schizophrenic. Yes, that's the word. She can seem happy and gleeful at one point, but five minutes later go into a psychotic rage.
