During the late 19th century there was a development of many companies that were very competitive, thus hurting the businessmen's profit. However, some of the businessmen would join together and drive out the rest of the business and be able to control prices. The formation of these trusts was terribly detrimental towards the nation's economy. Many dominant forces such as Carnegie, J.P. Morgan, and John Rockefeller arose with such dangerously great power that the fate of the nation was in jeopardy. .
With the creation of trusts came the possibility of infringement of one's rights. It was fortunate that the government swiftly made laws to destroy the trusts and protect anyone from breaching another's liberty. Furthermore, the common people who were also laborers formed unions to combat against poor working conditions along with other hazardous practices of the employee towards the worker. Not only could trusts ignore unions formed by workers, but also decimate them by bringing in scabs otherwise known as foreign workers. One example would be the Homestead Act in which Andrew Carnegie's company not only disagreed with the workers but even refused to compromise at all with the workers. Afterwards, Carnegie brought in scabs and the union had been destroyed; that is exactly what would have been done to democracy if the government had not stepped in with such acts as the Sherman Act to fully protect the common person. It is clear that the bringing of trusts would have resulted in infringement upon one's rights of liberty and in turn, the nation would have taken a turn for the worst.
Not only did trusts infringe upon the common person's rights, but also eliminated free trade and development of new technology. With the elimination of competition, the businesses were not forced to advance themselves causing a standstill and hinder development. No longer would business leaders be motivated to improve but rather, just sit back and relax almost as if all the work was already done.
