For the past few years, one of the big news items on the news is about cell phone dangers. There have been lots of stories about people getting tumors and brain cancer from cell phone use. In this paper, I hope to inform you of these problems and show you how to use cell phones safely.
The Cellular Telecommunications Internet Association(CTIA) has been conducting research since 1994 on cell phone dangers. George Carlos, a public health scientist, was hired by CTIA to conduct a six-year, $25 million research effort. .
Carlos's research concluded linked cell phone use to a brain tumor called acoustic neuroma. According to Carlos, people who had used cell phones for six years or more had a 50 percent higher chance of developing the tumor. .
Another study was done in 2001, by a research group in Australia lead by radiation expert Dr Peter French, principal scientific officer at the Centre for Immunology Research at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, said that mobile phone frequencies well below current safety levels could stress cells in a way that has been shown to increased susceptibility to cancer. The paper published by the research group states that repeated exposure to cell phone acts as repetitive stress, leading to continuous manufacture of heat shock proteins within cells: Heat shock proteins are always present in cells at a low level, but are manufactured in larger amounts when the cell is stressed by heat or other environmental factors. They repair other proteins that are adversely affected by the conditions, and are part of the cell's normal reaction to stress. However, if they are produced too often or for too long, they are known to give you cancer and make anti-cancer drugs not work as well.
The World Health Organization has said that you should reduce your cell phone usage and use a hands-free device to avoid your risk of cancer. If you have a cell phone, I believe you should go out and buy a headset piece, which are made by most mobile phone manufactures including Motorola, Nokia, Hitachi and Ericsson.
