Winston's Death Within 1984

In George Orwell's "1984", Winston Smith's love for Julia is what leads to his capture by the Party and to his final death because it causes him to commit acts against the party ration laws, have sex and join the "Brotherhood". With the relationship with Julia, Winston consumed items that were on ration and illegal to be purchased. " "Where did you get this stuff?" he said. "Black market" she said indifferently" (Orwell, 128) Julia had bought chocolate off the black market, chocolate at the moment was a rationed item. By eating it, Winston was in the process of breaking the law and would be a reason for his capture. To have unregistered sex was a crime in Oceania and would cause the capture of anyone who committed the act, "Their embrace had been a battle, the climax a victory. It was a blow struck against the Party."(Orwell, 133) Winston and Julia would have sex on many more occasions and all would be seen by the Party. The final act that Winston would commit for his love of Julia was to join the "Brotherhood" with her, "We want to join it and work for it. We are enemies of the Party."(Orwell,177) This would be the final act of love and treason Winston would commit before being imprisoned by the party. Although his love for Julia was pure, it was his greatest downfall, for it lead to his imprisonment and death.
In George Orwell's "1984" Julia's deceit would lead to the death of Winston through her lies of security, fake love making, and her joining of the "Brotherhood". Julia would lie to Winston of the security of the hideouts, she would claim they were secure from party telescreens and thought police, "The picture had fallen to the floor, uncovering the telescreen behind it."(Orwell,231) .
