" (88) The "chasm" is where the story begins, and revolves around the entire story. Sonny's brother is aware of the "chasm," yet what Sonny is thinking remains mysterious. Sonny's brother worries all the time about the misunderstandings between Sonny and himself; Sonny has never been able to understand him, because of the seven years difference in their ages.

For Sonny's own good, when his brother was in the army, he let Sonny stayed with his wife and her parents. Where he was going to school, and practicing his piano as well. He was doing just fine till Isabel started getting bad reputation letters from his school. The letters were about Sonny not going to school. He wanted to join navy and escape from the life. He was getting hooked on to drugs since then. His brother came back from army. They used to fight almost every time they met each other. Sonny couldn't stand his own brother, because he wanted to be a jazz musician, and his brother was against it.
When Sonny's brother finds out that he wants to be a jazz musician he was very disappointed with Sonny's decision about his life. He never took jazz musicians seriously in his life. He always used to think of the jazz musicians as fun type of people, who always hung out at the bars and never had a stable actual life. He tries to tell Sonny that people cant always be someone that they always want to be in their lives, but Sonny wasn't ready to accept it. So they had long conversation about Sonny's career. In the middle of a long conversation on page 94, Sonny's brother notes, "I simply couldn't see why on earth he'd want to spend his time hanging around nightclubs, clowning around on bandstands, while people pushed each other around a dance floor." (94) Readers understand how indifferent and ignorant he is about Sonny's music. Sonny's brother dissents with Sonny's idea of making a living as a musician and insists he should finish school first.
