Scientific Journal Reveiw

The abstract to the article I have chosen does accurately summarize the main findings of the article. In the abstract written by Naoto Saito and Kunio Takaoka for the article "New Synthetic Biodegradable Polymers as BMP Carriers for Bone Tissue Engineering" published in Biomaterials, an overview of the article's topic and a brief but accurate summary of the findings was given with enough technical jargon to allow the reader to decide whether or not to continue on to reading the full article. Since an abstract is a brief technical summary of a document, I feel that Saito and Kunio succeed in accomplishing the task required of the abstract. However, the abstract could have benefited by including information about the three methods for using bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), which are cell therapy, gene therapy, and cytokine therapy. The authors used a considerable portion of the article to discuss the methods for using BMP in bone tissue engineering but didn't refer to the three methods in the abstract. In light of the article's main topic being on biodegradable polymers that could be used as BMP carriers and the space limitations inherent to abstracts, it was probably better for the authors to focus on the main topic and keep the abstract succinct considering most readers of the article would be already familiar with the methods for using BMP in bone tissue engineering. .
             Procedure and Research Evaluation.
Although the procedure for the experimentation and research was given, I personally could not reproduce the work that the authors performed. The article, although fairly easy to read, is geared towards an audience that has a significant amount of scientific knowledge, especially with biology, physiology, biochemistry, and organic chemistry. I was able to follow the outline procedures the authors described but I wasn't able to grasp the underlining details to the research.
