The Ontario Agricultural College is located in Guelph because the soil is so fertilized and rich with nutrients. Guelph's soil is loamy, meaning that the soil is composed of a mixture of sand, clay, silt, and organic matter. It was nourished by glacial till as the glaciers shifted after the last ice age. Glacial till is what the glacier picks up while moving and is often found in soil and moraines. It is composed of clay silt, sand, gravel and boulders. Guelph's soil is drained quite effectively. There is rarely or never any flooding and this prevents essential nutrients from being washed away by the rain. This is due to the topography of Guelph; the rolling landscape helps lead rain and melted snow to waterways and sewage systems. Percolation is also successful in Guelph because it is underlined by sedimentary rock, which is often softer than igneous and metamorphic rock and allows water to filter though it easier. .
