Restore Ilog Pasig

You could smell the river for miles and that alone would make you sick to your stomach. .
The population density and concentration of industries have a significant impact on the water quality and environmental conditions in and around the Pasig River system.
In 1992, Pasig River was declared biologically dead.
A few years back, as adults passed by Ilog Pasig, they felt hope along with doubt well up inside them.
A feasibility study conducted in 1991 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) with funding from the Danish International Development Agency (Danida) and technical assistance from the Danish consultancy company, Carl Bro International, established the levels of pollution and the overall condition of the Pasig River. The study was conducted between 1989 and 1990 and has provided the main reference point for the rehabilitation programme.
The finding was: a deficiency of dissolved oxygen in the river system during the dry season is the main reason for the river's endangered state. This is caused by the high pollution load of organic matter discharged into the river system from three sources; 45% liquid domestic waste, 10% solid domestic waste, and 45% commercial and industrial waste.
The Pasig River Rehabilitation Project (PRRP) is implemented by the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC), composed of Cabinet members. .
The PRRP aims to clean up the heavily polluted river to spur tourism growth, carve out new transportation routes and lure foreign investors. A major part of the cleaning up entails the removal of structures located within the 10-meter easement along the riverbanks. This includes the houses of approximately 10,000 urban poor families living along the Pasig River. PRRP specifically aims to maintain the river's Class C rating for a body of water based on government standards. A Class C body of water is habitable to aquatic life, suitable for secondary sports like boating and sufficient for industrial use after treatment.
