             Using both Internet and library sources, explain how to write a definition. Begin with the chapter introduction in your anthology and the Little Brown Handbook. What are the different kinds of definitions? What are the elements of a formal definition? What do the writers do in these essays to define their terms? Use quotations from the essays to illustrate your points and document the sources you use.
             In writing a definition you should, "make your essay personal, amusing, vigorous, stimulating, memorable, and choose a generic topic rather than a specific topic" quoted by LEO. Writing a definition is also used to clarify or to clarify the meaning of words or technical terms that may be unfamiliar to the reader. To explain the essential nature of a thing or idea; it answers the question, For example "what is the essence of." (good parenting, love, a healthy family). The different kinds of definitions include analysis, classification, comparison, details, examples and incidents, negation, and many others. A formal definition is any "attitude, action, or institutional structure which subordinates a person or group because of age or any assignment of roles in society purely on the basis of age."(LBH. p 98) The writers of each of these stories use different ways to define their terms or meanings of these words.
             In the essay of "What is Poverty," by Jo Goodwin Parker the author tells us her definition of poverty. She uses descriptions and details of what she thinks poverty is. She starts her essay of with a question and then she continues on answering it in her own way. She quotes, "You ask me what is poverty?" she uses description to tells us her meaning of poverty. She quotes, ".
