Was able to take away their own free will and make them servants for his evil. In a sense they all became obsessed by this creature. Even Starbuck was able to be turned against his gut instinct by the shear horror of the captains obsession. That is why some believe Ishmael survived. He was the only one that didn't fit the mold, the only one who was so ignorant that it saved his life, as he sat back and took a spectators view of the whole thing.
With theories such as that who even needs facts? By now anyone can clearly see the point I am trying to make. Once again, though, they are still opinions, and you can't prove anything without facts. So everything stated here can be seen by everyone who reads this book, and looks for it. The crew, as stated above does go through character personality changes. It even clearly .
.
states that the crew's mood changes throughout the book because of lack of whales. Which of course was the captains fault for being obsessed Moby Dick. Starbuck tries to be the voice of reason throughout the better part of the story. He even at one point, before being corrupted, thought of killing the captain to end the madness that he is suffering. He also then goes through the same change that the crew does, although being the last one to do so. Ishmael the key link of the story does undergo a change, but not the one that the crew underwent. Ishmael went from being a inexperienced sailor to a whaler. He was not like the rest of the crew so for the most part sat back and took logs of the sights and happenings. Finally many different religions and nationalities came together to make this crew. They were a very diverse group with many different beliefs. They had old, and young; Christians and cannibals. If related to everyday society when people from different groups and religions come together there is usually a struggle of some sort. These are all key facts taken directly from the book itself and not skewed in everywhere, that all come together as a whole to help along the end product of doom for the captain and crew.
