If you were to walk down the street in an average Canadian city and ask the question, "What is your favorite sport?" most people are likely to answer with hockey. Hockey is a Canadian game that defines us as a nation and as a culture. We are the birthplace of the sport and our people have dominated the game since the beginning. Many of the greatest players to ever play the game have been Canadian. It is a facet of everyday life in most Canadian homes. Weather it is watching hockey or talking about hockey or even playing hockey, most Canadians are involved with some aspect of hockey. The morning paper and radio broadcasts provide all Canadian homes with information and statistics on the game played the night before. Television allows fans to watch games, sometimes with a better view of the action than if they had been there themselves. Drivers should be on the lookout for the many young people playing hockey in the street. .
There have been many different theories as to where the game of hockey originated. One of the most compelling arguments is that hockey was born in Nova Scotia. Therioies suggest that hockey originated in 1800 in Nova Scotia, where the game of Hurley was adapted for the ice to be played on ponds. Many Canadian believe this theory to be true. Hockey is recognized as Canada's national sport and its binds us patriotically. While watching the news a few weeks ago, there was a story about a new theory of where hockey started from. This theory stated that the United States was the actual first place where hockey was played. When the reporter asked people on the street their opinion on this theory some people were getting down right mad at it. Many people could not believe the audacity of this claim. How could hockey be created somewhere else but Canada? That's blasphemy! This shows how much of an impact the sport has on our nation. We love it almost more than we love our country.
