Johannes Jorgensen

 

            
             The Poet Johannes Jorgensen was born in Svendborg on November 6th, 1866. At the age of 16, in 1884, Johannes went to Copenhagen where he would become a student. Johannes had a liking for the many faces and the beauty of nature at an early age. Also, during his early years, Johannes showed a strong and sensitive liking for poetry through which he could express his dreams and emotional observations and for the rest of his life it remained his favorite way of expression.
             In 1894, Jorgensen visited for the first time with Assisi. This was the beginning of what would become the "predominant occupation" for the rest of his life. Jorgensen had a great love for Saint Frances, the famous son of Assisi who was born there and who lived as well as worked there until he died. In 1907, Jorgensen would write his best biography on Saint Francis which would later make him a world famous author. In 1952, Jorgensen moved from Assisi back to Svendborg. In 1913 he had left his wife, Amalie f. Ewald, and their 7 children after a difficult marriage. But because Johannes a converted to Catholicism, he could not remarry. When Amalie, his wife, died in 1935 he married an Austrian woman named Helena Klein.
             Throughout Johannes Jorgensen's life, he experienced many uphill and downhill battles. Although converting to Catholicism and being true to the religion he still fought many battles with himself. The poetry of Johannes Joergensen is most likely what has given him the most admirers in his country. Many people today, read his poetry because of his beautiful language and his sense of nature. .
