Virgo The Constellation

Here lies the mythology of Virgo and where she is thought to come from. The constellation of Virgo, nickname the Virgin Maiden comes from it's Greek mythology. It is named for the Greek Goddess Demeter, which is the Earth Goddess, it is associated with the arrival of Spring. Virgo plays a major role in Demeter's life role. Hades the god of the underworld, promised himself that he would marry Demeter's daughter Persephone. He rode up to Persephone in a black chariot carried by 4 black horses wearing golden harnesses and reins, then Persephone got abducted by Hades. Her mother (Demeter) was very worried that she never returned. Demeter then went on a search for her beloved daughter. When Zeus pleaded for her to return without her daughter and face her marriage to Hades, Demeter refused and continued with her search. Because of her long journey, she had no time to bring in the crops. People were starving and didn't understand how there Earth-Goddess could be so cruel. After so much searching, Zeus sent Hermes, messenger of the gods, to go see Hades and tell him Persephone must go with Hermes. Hades agreed to let her go since the power of the gods of heaven were much stronger than he. Demeter was very happy to see her daughter return, but soon did Persephone tell her mother that she loved her husband Hades very much. There was then so much chaos. Zeus came to solve the problem by saying that Persephone could spend half her time in the underworld and the other with her mother. Virgo is believed to be Demeter but the other mythology says that she is the daughter of Demeter. Virgo is also believed to be the Goddess of birth, marriage and health. Also the ancient Egyptians thought that Virgo was Isis the protector of the living and the dead.
