Joseph Campbell quoted that (How people see their hero as how, metaphorically, they see themselves, determine their goals, and view their passage through life). This idea can be proven through Beowulf, an Old English Poetry. Beowulf is the classic hero that is larger then life that everyone wishes in some way or another, that they were like him. Campbell had a good point; also a person looks to a hero as what they want to be. A personal connection between character and reader is what brings the reader into a story. Beowulf shows several ideas and features that one can be inspired by from that personal connection through which they are who they want to be, and how they want to get that way. Beowulf has journeyed to Denmark as a strong well-armored soldier, in hope to help the Danes with the problem they were having with the Grendel. The Grendel has been attacking and eating the Danes while the Dane Warriors were powerless and unable to stop Grendel. The first impression gained by the reader is a super man like ability from Beowulf. The Reader is able to see willpower to help those in need and sees how they also could not stand by and do nothing, Also, The reader sees his super nature strength that he or she does not have but wishes they did. In proving Beowulf's valued, he tells of his journeys and or the best and monsters he has faced. "A monster seized me, drew me swiftly toward the bottom, swimming with its claws tight in my flesh. But fate let me find its heart with my sword, hack myself free"" lines 286-290. Beowulf is sharing his journey over seas as sea creatures attacked him and his men. Readers are draw word to word as the bravery of Beowulf increases and the reader sees this bravery as something to look up too and something that they would want to have in life.
