Frost wishes to get rid of the wall that separates him and his neighbor. He even tries to persuade his neighbors thinking by telling him there is no need for a physical barrier because Frost has all apple trees on his land, and his neighbor has all pine. He even tries to break through the physical barrier with trust. "My apple trees will never get across and eat the cones under his pines, I tell him."(25-26) Frost's attempt at getting creating a solid relationship between him and his neighbor is ignored. His neighbor simply responds, "Good fences make good neighbors," (27).
             The only time when Frost and his neighbor communicate is when they are repairing the fences that separate them. This lack of communication tends to create another barrier between both worlds. .
             On the contrary, Dr. Watson believes that there is more to life than work, and one should enjoy in other activities to relieve the stress that works brings. In a sense, Holmes feels the same way that the stress built up by work must be relieved, and in effect he turns to cocaine, as a temporary distraction to work. But, in essence, Holmes refers to his cocaine usage as a stimulant that provides him with "brainwork," when there is no "brainwork." Sherlock Holmes always needs some sort of duty on his mind, otherwise he cannot function. "My mind," he said, "rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. I can dispense then with artificial stimulants. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation. That is why I have chosen my own particular profession, or rather created it, for I am the only one in the world." (136) .
             Holmes disagrees with any form of romantic relationship. He believes that women only serve as a distraction in a working man's world and may even be harmful. "It is of the first importance not to allow your judgment to be biased by personal qualities.
