The birds (movie) compared to The Birds (short story)

She tries to get out multiple times but the birds keep forcing her back in and she is completely isolated. The setting in the story is also a small coastal town but it is near London, England instead of in California. There is only one major setting as opposed to the two main settings in the movie. The main setting in the story is Nat's home where he, his wife, and his two kids live. The first bombardment by the birds takes place in Nat's bedroom and he eventually boards up all of his windows and barricades all of the doors. He lives a large distance away from any other people and his only connection to the outside world is a radio. When that stops broadcasting he is completely isolated and has no people that he can go to for any help whatsoever because his nearest neighbors, the Triggs, are killed by the birds in their own house. Both of the tales show isolation through distance from civilization. However, the movie focuses more on isolation with people nearby that are unable to be reached and the story shows isolation where no one is around for quite a distance.
In the Movie version of The Birds isolation is most evident in the character of Annie Hayworth. She is the schoolteacher of the town, and she used to be in love with Mitch. She seems to still be in love with him yet she lives by herself isolated from anyone who loves her. When the birds attack she is on her own with Mitch's sister Cathy and no one is there to help her save Cathy. She is killed when she forces Cathy into the house and tries to defend her from the birds. This character was alone from the beginning of the movie and while children whom she cares for surround her, none of them are really hers. In the story the character that most personifies the theme of isolation is Nat's wife. She lives with Nat and the two children. When the attacks start, however, the children are too young to understand what is happening, and Nat knows what to do because of war experience.
